Essex Based Hospital To Be Taken To Court Over Legionella Cases
The Essex hospital is to be taken to court under the Health & Safety at Work Act by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).
The prosecution follows official figures revealing that 13 patients have contracted legionnaire's disease at the hospital since 2002. In particular, the charge bought against Basildon Hospital concerns those cases of legionnaire's disease that occurred between February 2004 and December 2010.
The hospital has spent approximately £3 million in the last decade to improve conditions and attempt to stamp out legionella on site. There have been no new cases of legionnaire's disease being contracted at the hospital since 2011, and the Chief Executive of Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Trust has assured that they will continue to work with the HSE and other bodies to make sure that this remains the case.
The first hearing is due to take place at a later date at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court.
